Proven Treatments for Hormone Refractory Prostate Cancer

There are three general categories of treatments for men with hormone refractory prostate cancer and one covering "other" that are less recognized as HRPC treatments.  These are:

  • Second-line hormonal therapies. Ketoconazole, estrogens and more ("other" below, can also be considered 2nd-line hormone therapies.)

  • Chemotherapy. This is an extensive set of papers and tables covering use with HRPC.

  • Radiation. Covered here are spot radiation, radiopharmaceuticals and more.

  • Other. Treatments covered here are ones that HRPC patients might want to investigate further. Treatments that have had some clinical trials data where PSA or other response rates have been published, but are lower than one would want or treatments that only shown a lengthening of PSA doubling time  or delayed progression as manifested by a PSA decline less than the 50% criteria normally used. Treatments that fall into this category are using leukine (gm-csf), leukine and retinoids, leukine and thalidomide, leukine and ketoconazole, somatostatin analogs(e.g. Sandostatin LAR, dutasteride (Avodart®) and nilutamide. A new addition is the combination of leukine and Revlimid (lenalidomide.)

     Potential/possible uses for "other" are:

  • delay time to start chemotherapy.

  • extend off period between chemotherapy treatments.
